How To Quickly Select An Entire Sentence In Office Word

Last Updated on March 19, 2018 by admin 1 Comment

Microsoft Office Word is the most popular word processing software out there. Like other software from Microsoft, it offers hundreds of keyboard shortcuts to help users to get their job done quickly.

While working on a document with Word program, you might want to delete an entire sentence. How do you do that? You will select the entire sentence using the mouse and then hit the delete key, right?

Most computer users use the mouse to select an entire sentence in Office Word program. Users who prefer keyboard use Shift and arrow keys (hold down the Shift key and then press an arrow key) to select an entire sentence. Both these methods are popular among computer users, but these methods don’t let you select an entire sentence quickly, especially when you have a long sentence.

There is a better way to select an entire sentence in Word program quickly. The method requires you to use both keyboard and mouse but does the job very quickly.

To select an entire sentence in Office Word program, hold down the Ctrl key, move the mouse cursor anywhere on the sentence that you would like to select and then click to select to select the whole sentence.

You can use left or right Ctrl key on the keyboard. But be sure to hold down the Ctrl key until the sentence is selected.

We accidentally discovered this handy trick while working with Office Word 365/2016 and not sure if the same keyboard shortcut will work in Word 2013, 2010 and earlier versions but it should work. We are also not sure if the same thing is possible on Mac.

Please let us if this useful method works in Office 2013 and earlier versions.

An approach I like is to place the mouse cursor in front of the first character I want to delete, usually the beginning of a sentence. I then press the F8 key and type the last character of what I want to select–almost always the period at the end of that sentence. That highlights the entire sentence, and I then press the Delete key.

Or I can press the period key again to select even more sentences before pressing Delete, and so on.

And if I started selecting in the middle of a sentence to remove its remainder, after pressing F8 and the period key I cursor left with keyboard’s left arrow to keep the period intact, and then hit Delete.
