The system tray area on Windows 11 taskbar shows the network, battery, and volume icons by default. In addition to these system icons, third-party programs might also show their icons in the system tray for quick access.
However, on some PCs, an ENG or ENG US icon also shows up on the system tray area of the taskbar.
What is ENG US text on the Windows 11 taskbar?
The ENG US indicates about current keyboard layout selected on your computer. It’s generally called the language bar. For example, the ENG US indicates English US is the current keyboard layout on your PC.
The language bar helps users quickly access and switch between installed keyboard layouts.
When you click on the ENG US icon, a flyout pops up showing installed keyboard languages. By clicking on a layout, you can switch to it.
In short, the ENG US on the Windows 11 taskbar indicates that the English US keyboard layout is currently being used on your computer. If you change the keyboard layout to something else, that will replace ENG US.
Also, ENG US text shows only if more than one keyboard layout is installed on your Windows 11 PC. That is, if English US is the only keyboard layout installed on your Windows 11, then the ENG US would not appear.
Some users like to free up the space by hiding or removing the ENG US text from the taskbar. Here is how to do that.
Method 1 of 2
Hide or remove ENG from Windows 11 taskbar
Step 1: Go to Windows 11 Settings > Time & language > Typing page.
Step 2: Click Advanced keyboard settings.
Step 3: In the Switching input methods section, select Use the desktop language bar when available option. This will show the desktop language bar instead of the language bar in the taskbar. But there is a way to hide the desktop language bar as well. So follow the next two steps for that.
Step 4: On the same page, click the Language bar options (refer to the picture above) link.
Step 5: In the properties dialog box, select the Hidden option and then click the Apply button. That’s it!
Method 2 of 2
Another way to hide or remove ENG US from the Windows 11 taskbar
As mentioned earlier in the article, the ENG US text shows up on the taskbar only if there are two or more keyboard layouts are installed. If you like to use only the currently installed English US keyboard layout, you remove the other keyboard language(s), which will automatically remove the ENG US from the taskbar. Here is how.
Step 1: Open Windows 11 Settings app. Go to Time & language > Language & region page.
Step 2: In the Preferred languages section, click on the three dots icon present on the language entry that you want to remove and then click the Remove option.
