Most modern computers, especially those released in the last few years, have SSDs (Solid State Drives) as the default storage. As you might already know, SSDs make Windows boot faster than traditional hard disk drives and enhance the operating system’s overall performance.
Although modern computers boot faster, apps that are configured to load or start with Windows 11 not only make Windows 11 boot slower but also appear on the screen right after you see the desktop.
If you have been running Windows 11 on your computer and you probably have a couple of apps that load with Windows 11, some apps automatically add themselves to the Windows 11 startup when you install them. For instance, when you install the Skype app, it’s automatically added to the Windows 11 startup. Because of this, the Skype app opens right after you see the Windows 11 desktop after the boot.
This guide shows you how to disable apps that start with Windows 11. We can use the Settings app as well as the Task Manager to view startup apps and disable them.
NOTE 1: Not all apps that load with Windows 11 significantly slow down the boot process. Only the apps that require a significant amount of resources adversely impact the Windows 11 boot time.
NOTE 2: We advise you to periodically check and disable unnecessary apps that load with Windows 11 for the best performance.
Method 1 of 2
Disable startup apps via Settings in Windows 11
Step 1: Open Windows 11 Settings using search or Windows logo + I hotkey.
Step 2: In the left pane of the Settings app, click Apps.
Step 3: Now, on the right side, click Startup to see a list of apps.
Step 4: On this page, to stop an app from starting with Windows 11, move the toggle button next to an app’s entry to the off position. That’s it!
If you are not sure about an app, a quick internet search should help you decide if you need to turn it off or on.
Method 2 of 2
Turn off startup apps in Windows 11 via Task Manager
Step 1: Open the Task Manager using the search or Ctrl + Shift + Esc hotkey. You can also click on an empty spot on the taskbar and click Task Manager to open it.
Step 2: On the left pane, click the Startup apps tab.
Step 3: Here, the Task Manager shows “Enabled” next to apps that automatically load with Windows 11. To prevent an app from loading with Windows 11, right-click on it and then click the Disable option.
Once again, disable only apps that you are sure about.
We also recommend a quick internet search about the app before stopping it from loading with Windows 11. Apps like Skype, Microsoft Teams, Lenovo Vantage, Microsoft To Do, Grammarly, Phone Link, and WhatsApp automatically load with Windows 11 and can be safely disabled.
