In Windows and macOS operating systems, web browsers automatically save all downloaded files to the Downloads folder. Apple Safari, the built-in web browser in macOS, also uses the Downloads folder as the default location to save downloaded files.
While the default Downloads folder is easy to access from the Finder and can also be accessed right from the dock, the Downloads can easily fill up fast, especially if you often download large files.
Mac users who use the Safari browser as their primary web browser might want to change the default download location for various reasons.
Luckily, the Safari browser offers an option to change the default download location. Refer to the directions given below to change the default download location in the Safari browser on a Mac.
NOTE: Please note that changing the default download location in Safari browser does not affect the default download location on other web browsers.
IMPORTANT: This method cannot be used to change the default download location on Safari browser installed on Windows 10/11 .
Change the download folder in Safari browser on Macs
Step 1: Open the Safari browser.
Step 2: Click the Safari menu and then click Settings. Users who prefer keyboard shortcuts can use Command + , shortcut to open Safari Settings.
Step 3: Here, under the General tab, the File download location drop-down shows the current folder selected to save the downloaded files. As said earlier, with default settings, it’s the Downloads folder.
Step 4: To set a new location as the default Download location, click the drop-down, click Other, browse to a folder that you want to set as the default download location, and then click the Select button. That’s it! From now on, all files that you download will be automatically saved to the new location.
