Computer users regularly create new folders to keep files and folders organized. If you recently upgraded from an earlier version of Windows to the latest Windows 11, you might wonder how to create a new folder.
Windows 11 offers multiple options to create new folders. However, creating a new folder is not as easy as in Windows 10. In Windows 10 File Explorer, we can click the New Folder icon on the ribbon to create a new folder. The ribbon has been removed from the Windows 11 File Explorer, meaning users cannot create a new folder with a single click now.
That said, creating a new folder in Windows 11 can be done with just two clicks. The following are the four easy ways to create new folders in Windows 11.
Method 1 of 4
Create a new folder in Windows 11 via the context menu
Step 1: Right-click on an empty spot in the File Explorer (where files and folders appear), click New, and then click Folder to create a new folder immediately.
The newly created folder is automatically named a New Folder. When you create multiple new folders, they will be named New Folder, New Folder (2), New Folder (3), and so on.
Method 2 of 3
Create a new folder in Windows 11
Step 1: In the File Explorer, navigate to the location where you would like to add a new folder.
Step 2: Click the New button in the File Explorer toolbar and then click Folder to create a new folder immediately.
Method 3 of 3

If you need to create new folders often, consider using Ctrl + Shift + N keyboard shortcut. This is one of the most useful keyboard shortcuts on offer in the Windows operating system.
Method 4 of 4
Create a new folder in Windows 11 via Command Prompt
Step 1: Open the Command Prompt using search or any other method.
Step 2: At the Command Prompt window, copy and paste the following command to navigate to the location where you would like to create a new folder.
cd D:\IntoWindows\Important\Documents
In the above command, replace the “D:\IntoWindows\Important\Documents” path with the path to the actual location.
Step 3: Finally, type the mkdir NewFolder command to create a new folder in the selected location immediately.
NOTE: The Command Prompt might return “A subdirectory or file NewFolder already exists” error message if there is a folder named NewFolder already present in the selected location. Please rename the current folder to something else and then run the command again.
You may close the Command Prompt window now.
Tip: You can use the F2 or Function + F2 key to quickly rename a file or folder in the Windows operating system. Select a file or folder that you want to rename, and then press F2 or Function + F2 to begin renaming it.
