The Windows 11 File Explorer offers multiple options to check the size of a file. You can hover the mouse cursor over a file to see the file size in the file tips, select a file, and then click Properties, or select a file and then press Alt + Enter to view the size of the file.
Although finding the size of a file is easy and does not take more than two clicks, you might want the File Explorer in Windows 11 to always show the size next to the file name.
Luckily, we can configure the Windows 11 File Explorer to show the file size next to the file names. All you need to do is change the File Explorer view to either Details, Content, or Tiles.
Yes, the Details, Content, and Tiles views show file size next to files. While Details and Content views show file sizes next to files in another column, the Tiles view shows file sizes below file names unless the file name is too long. That is when, in the Tiles view, the File Explorer does not show file size for files with long names, as the space is used to show the file name.
Change view to Details/Content/Tiles view in Windows 11 File Explorer to see file sizes
NOTE: Please note that none of these views or any other File Explorer views show folder sizes by default. You need to manually check the folder size. These methods only show file sizes and not folder sizes.
IMPORTANT: The File Explorer Home does not show file sizes.
Step 1: Open the File Explorer.
Step 2: Click View in the toolbar and then select either Details, Tiles, or Content.
Use the keyboard shortcut to quickly change the File Explorer view to see file sizes
Did you know that you can switch between File Explorer views using keyboard shortcuts? Use Ctrl + Shift + 6 to switch to the Details view, Ctrl + Shift + 8 to the Content view, and then Ctrl + Shift + 7 to the Tiles view.
NOTE: If the keyboard shortcut is not working, please select a file and then try again.
Tip: When viewing files in the Details view, you can move the Size column to show right next to the file name by holding the Size column header and then moving it to the Name column.
