Have you recently purchased a new computer running Windows 11? Do you want to check if your Windows 11 PC has NVMe or SATA SSD? This guide shows you how to check if your Windows 11 PC has NVMe or SATA SSD without using any third-party tools.
Why are NVMe SSDs better than SATA SSDs?
An NVMe SSD has many advantages over a SATA SSD. To start with, it’s much faster than a SATA-based SSD. A good NVMe SSD can offer up to 7x faster read and write speeds when compared to a SATA-based SSD. In short, it provides superior performance over traditional SATA SSDs and is a key upgrade for those looking to maximize system speed and efficiency.
This means that when you install Windows 11 on an NVMe SSD, Windows 11 will boot faster, and apps will load faster, enhancing your Windows 11 experience.
An NVMe SSD is very useful for tasks that require high-speed storage and quick data access, such as gaming and video content creation.
Until now, Windows 11 users had to resort to third-party tools or the Device Manager to check the type of SSDs installed on their computers. However, a recent update to Windows 11 has added a nifty feature that allows you to know the type of SSD installed on your Windows 11 PC without using third-party tools.
The built-in Task Manager in Windows 11 can help you check if your PC has NVMe or SATA SSD. Here is how.
Check if your PC has NVMe SSD or SATA SSD
Step 1: Perform a right-click on an empty spot on the taskbar and then click Task Manager to open the Task Manager window. Alternatively, use the Ctrl + Shift + Esc keys to open the Task Manager instantly.
Step 2: In the Task Manager window, click the Performance tab in the left pane. If you cannot see the Performance tab, simply click the second icon from the top in the left pane to switch to the Performance tab.
Step 3: Here, click on the Disk graph tile to see details about your storage. The graph tile shows the type of the SSD, as you can see in the picture below.
Additionally, the Type field (located in the lower right corner) shows whether the SSD is NVMe or SATA.
NOTE: If the Task Manager is showing only SSD and not displaying the SSD type (NVMe/SATA), it’s likely because you are running an older version of Windows 11 or the update has not been installed on your Windows 11 PC yet.
Please check for updates and then check again.
