Over the last weekend, my little son accidentally changed the display language on my Windows 10 running laptop from English to Sanskrit, which I had installed to check the steps to install a new language pack in Windows 10.
Changing the Windows 10/11 display language back to English is easy if you can read the current display language. However, the job becomes tough if the display language is alien to you.
Whether you accidentally or intentionally changed the display language, this guide will show you how to change the display language back to English in Windows 10/11.
Method 1 of 2
Change Windows 10 language to English
Step 1: Open the Settings app using the Windows logo + I hotkey. Alternatively, right-click the Start button and then click on the sixth entry from the bottom of the list to open the Settings app (refer to the picture below).
Step 2: At the home page of the Settings app, click on the Time & language category. This can be easily identified by its icon (refer to the picture below).
Step 3: Next, click the Language option (third option). Again, you can refer to the icon next to it for easy identification.
Step 4: Here, select English from the drop-down menu.
If the English entry is missing, it’s likely because the English language pack is not installed. To do that, click on the plus icon (refer to the picture below), select English from the list, click Next (left button on the screen), and then click the Install (left button on the screen) button.
Windows 10 might take a few minutes to install the language pack.
Step 5: Select the installed English language from the list.
Step 6: When you get the following prompt, click on the left button on the screen to sign out. Or to manually sign out, right-click the Start button, select the second option from the bottom, and then click on the first option from the top of the list.
Step 7: When you see the Lock/login screen, type your password/PIN or use your fingerprint to sign in to Windows 10. You should now see the English language as the display language.
Method 2 of 2
Change the Windows 11 display language to English
Step 1: Open the Settings app using the Windows logo + I keyboard shortcut. You can also use search, but if the display language is set to a language you cannot understand, right-click the Start button and select the sixth option from the bottom of the list.
Step 2: In the Settings app, click on Time & language. Once again, if you do not understand the language on the screen, click the seventh option with a clock on the globe (refer to the picture below).
Step 3: Here, on the right side, click on the second option called Language and region. Again, a small globe with letters will appear next to the option.
Step 4: Select English (United States) or any other English from the drop-down menu.
If the English language is not installed, please click on the button (refer to the picture below), scroll down the list, then click Next (refer to the picture below), and click Install (refer to the image below) to begin installing the English language.
Once installed, select English from the drop-down menu, as shown above.
Step 5: Click on the Sign out button that shows up on the same page (refer to the picture below) to sign out and apply the English language. Alternatively, right-click the Start button, click on the second option from the bottom, and then select the first option to sign out. That’s it!
You can now sign in to your PC to see English as the display language.
