To stop worrying about privacy, many users want to disable their computer’s microphone to avoid unauthorized apps and services from listening to conversations and collecting audio data without their consent.
Windows 11 offers multiple options to disable your device’s microphone. You can use the Settings app, Device Manager, Control Panel, or keyboard to disable a microphone in Windows 11.

Disable the microphone using the keyboard in Windows 11
Not all laptop keyboards offer an option to disable the microphone. If your laptop supports disabling the microphone, you should see a key with a microphone picture. For instance, on most Lenovo ThinkPad laptops, F4 or Fn + F4 can enable or disable the microphone.

Disable the microphone via Device Manager in Windows 11
Step 1: Open the Device Manager. To do this, right-click the Windows logo icon (Start button) on the taskbar and then click Device Manager to open the same.
Step 2: Here, expand the Audio inputs and outputs tree to see your microphone array’s entry.
Step 3: Right-click the microphone array’s entry and then click the Disable device option.
Step 4: When asked for the confirmation, click the Yes button. That’s it! The microphone should stop working now.

Disable Windows 11 PC’s microphone via Settings
Step 1: Open the Settings app.
Step 2: On the left side, click System. Now, on the right side, click Sound.
Step 3: Scroll down the page to see the Input section. Here, click Microphone array.
Step 4: Finally, in the General section, click the Don’t allow button next to Audio to stop Windows 11 and installed apps from accessing the microphone. Click the Allow button again to enable the microphone immediately.

Disable Windows 11 PC’s microphone via Control Panel
Step 1: Open the Control Panel using the search.
Step 2: Change the Control Panel’s view to Small icons and then click Sound.
Step 3: In the Sound dialog, click the Recording tab.
Step 4: Here, right-click the Microphone array and then click the Disable option. To enable the Microphone again, right-click its entry and then click the Enable option.
